Health & Beauty Benefits of Matcha

Matcha lattes, matcha shots, matcha smoothies, matcha infused drinks, matcha to-go sticks, matcha ice-cream…SO much matcha.

Before you tout matcha as just another clean beauty wellness trend, lets dig into the benefits. First of all, matcha has been around for 4,000 years. Its origins began in China but then became wildly adopted and embraced by Japanese culture. Today companies have infused this naturally delectable tea with sugar, mixed it in ice-cream and packed in packets…but that’s just what companies do. They like to make money on consumer demand.

There are some really good matcha powders out there and some not so much. For the purposes of keeping this post short and this is a wellness blog, any matcha that is made with refined sugar, and/or processed with chemicals is no good and I won’t be talking about it here. Such products actually degrade the benefits of this glorious tea. #toxinfreebaby 

  • Matcha has an ORAC value of 1348 units per gram. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. Antioxidants are extremely important for reducing signs of aging and cleaning free-radicals out of the body. The higher the ORAC value a food contains, the richer it is in antioxidants.
  • What makes matcha bright green is chlorophyll. The tea plant Camellia sinensi  is grown in the shade for 20 days which causes the plant to produce more chlorophyll. The leaves are then steamed (to prevent oxidization), dried, de-stemmed and ground into a powder. Look for organic ceremonial grade matcha from Japan. You can tell a faux matcha by its dull yellow-green color and bitter/gritty taste (probably why I had a bad experience the first time I tried matcha). 
  • Foods that are rich in chlorophyll help detoxify the body by cleaning out the cells from toxins and providing you with with clean burning energy and radiant skin.
  • Contains vitamins A, C ,E, K, and B vitamins. Also contains trace minerals like selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium.
  • Reduces joint inflammation and UV damage.
  • Cleaner on the teeth. Matcha doesn’t stain the teeth like regular green tea or black teas.
  • Boosts metabolism.
  • Rich in amino acid L-theanine which is responsible for boosting brain alpha waves to produce a relaxed and calm state. L-theanine has been regarded as safe by doctors for the treatment of anxiety and improving concentration.
  • Recent study found that matcha can improve physical endurance by 24%.
